Frameless Glass Shower Doors: Disadvantages You Should Know Before You Buy
At Clearglass, we install a lot of frameless glass shower doors & screens. They’re our most popular product for bathroom renovations across Cambridge, Newmarket, Ely and Huntingdon, and for good reason — they look spectacular and are easier to maintain than framed alternatives. But an honest assessment requires acknowledging the downsides too, so here they are: the genuine disadvantages of frameless glass shower doors that you should factor into your decision.
1. Higher Upfront Cost
This is the most obvious and most commonly cited disadvantage. Frameless shower screens require thicker glass (8mm or 10mm rather than 4–6mm), more substantial hardware, and more precise installation than framed alternatives. All of this adds cost. A quality frameless custom shower screen typically costs 30–70% more than a comparable framed or semi-frameless installation.
Whether this is a true disadvantage depends on your perspective. The longer lifespan, superior aesthetics, and lower ongoing maintenance of frameless screens mean the total cost of ownership over 15–20 years is often more competitive than the upfront price difference suggests. But the initial outlay is real, and for budget-conscious bathroom renovations, it may be a genuine constraint.
2. Frameless Glass Shower Doors Require Professional Installation
Frameless glass shower doors & screens cannot reasonably be DIY-installed by most homeowners. The glass is heavy, the hardware requires precise positioning (drilling through glass to exact tolerances), and the fitting must be perfectly level and plumb. Errors in installation can lead to the door not closing properly, water escaping, hardware failure, or — in worst cases — glass breakage.
This means you’re committed to professional fitting costs as well as supply costs. There’s no option to save money by self-installing as you might with a basic framed enclosure. For most homeowners this is fine — the professional fitting is part of the package — but it’s a factor to acknowledge.
3. Water Leakage at the Gaps
Frameless glass shower doors, by definition, don’t have sealing frames around all their edges. There are small gaps at hinges, between fixed and moving panels, and at the base. While quality frameless installations use magnetic or rubber seals to minimise water escape, they are inherently less watertight than fully framed alternatives.
In practice, with good installation and appropriate daily use — directing the showerhead away from the door gap, using a bath mat — this is rarely a significant problem. But it’s worth knowing that frameless screens require a bit more consideration in how the shower is used than a fully framed enclosure.
4. Cleaning, Despite Common Claims, Isn’t Entirely Effortless
Frameless screens are widely marketed as ‘easy to clean’, and relative to framed enclosures with their soap-trapping channels, they genuinely are. But ‘easier’ is not the same as ‘no maintenance’. Without a hydrophobic easy-clean coating — which we strongly recommend specifying — large frameless glass panels in hard water areas like Cambridgeshire will accumulate limescale and soap scum on the glass surface, which requires regular cleaning.
With an easy-clean coating, water beads off the surface and the glass stays cleaner for longer. But even with a coating, the screen needs a daily squeegee and periodic cleaning. If someone in your household has particularly high expectations of zero-maintenance glass, it’s important to set realistic expectations.
We recommend purchasing a high quality Glass Cleaner- like our own which can be purchased from our showroom in Cottenham, Cambridge.
5. Hard Water Staining Is More Visible on Large Frameless Glass Shower Doors & Panels
Cambridgeshire is one of the harder water areas in England. Calcium and magnesium deposits from hard water can leave white marks on glass surfaces, and these are particularly noticeable on large, clear, uninterrupted glass panels. The easy-clean coating mentioned above mitigates this significantly, as does a water softener for the whole home. But homeowners who don’t address the hard water factor may find large frameless panels require more frequent cleaning than they anticipated.
6. Hardware Can Require Ongoing Attention
The hinges, clips, and handles of a frameless glass shower doors & screens — particularly on a door that’s used multiple times daily — are working components that can require attention over time. Hinges may need occasional adjustment to keep the door swinging correctly and closing against its seal. Budget hardware from unknown manufacturers can fail within a few years. This is why hardware quality is so important in a frameless screen: quality stainless steel or solid brass components from reputable manufacturers will last decades; cheap alternatives will not.
7. They Can Feel Cold in Winter Bathrooms
This sounds trivial but is worth mentioning: large glass panels are cold to the touch and create a significant cold surface in the bathroom on winter mornings. In a well-heated bathroom this is barely noticeable, but in a poorly insulated bathroom, the thermal mass of a large glass panel can make the room feel colder. Proper bathroom insulation and an adequate heated towel rail address this, but it’s a factor for older Cambridgeshire properties with less-than-perfect thermal performance.
The Bottom Line- Frameless Glass Shower Doors
None of these disadvantages should necessarily put you off a frameless shower screen — for most homeowners, they’re manageable, minor, or easily addressed by specifying the right product (particularly the easy-clean coating). But going in with clear expectations means you’ll be entirely satisfied with your installation rather than surprised by things you weren’t expecting.
At Clearglass, we’re always honest about what you’re getting. We’ll talk through these considerations with you before you commit, and make sure you get a screen that’s right for your bathroom, your lifestyle, and your budget.
